The new Skywatcher AZ EQ5 GT Synscan mount is the 40% lighter version of the larger Sky-Watcher AZ EQ6 GT. It is easily transportable and features numerous new integrated functions, useful for both the astrophotographer and the expert observer.

The AZ EQ5 head weighs just 7.7kg (approximate dimensions 37x32cm when set to our latitudes), which makes it easily transportable, also thanks to the retractable counterweight bar. A feature highly appreciated by those looking for a travel mount is the new tripod design: the legs can be folded backwards as is the case with numerous photographic tripods, and the use of the integrated half-pillar makes it very easy to transport (when closed it measures just 60cm and weighs 6.1kg), without compromising stability, which remains excellent thanks to the wider leg opening compared to the classic tripods equipped with other Sky-Watcher mounts.

Like all Sky-Watcher Synscan mounts, the AZ-EQ5 GT has the standard ST4 autoguider port, but it also integrates 2 ports to control the remote shutter of digital SLR cameras (2 cables supplied for Canon EOS, models equipped with a jack connection for remote shutter, therefore not models like 5D, but 600D and similar). If you wish to control the mount from your PC, it is possible via a USB port integrated directly into the mount. In this way, you can use your favorite planetarium software (using the ASCOM platform) to control the AZ EQ5 GT Synscan, forgetting about serial cables, adapters, etc.

A new functionality for PPEC: the AZ-EQ5 GT Synscan is equipped, on the RA worm gear, with an index that allows the mount to always keep track of the current position of the index on the screw. This means that the user can start the PEC at any time, after having performed the first recording, in order to improve tracking precision in astrophotography. If the polar alignment has been performed accurately, it is not necessary to repeat the PEC procedure for the next astrophotographic session, thus obtaining a PPEC (Permanent Periodic Error Correction). The PEC routine can be performed both manually and using the autoguider comfortably. It is important, if you want to keep the PEC for subsequent sessions, to avoid unlocking the mount axes when it is turned off; in this case, it is useful to park from the utility menu, turn off the mount and disassemble it, taking care to leave the axes locked. Control 1 or 2 DSLRs: the Sky-Watcher AZ-EQ5 GT Synscan is equipped with 2 ports to control up to 2 DSLRs via the SynScan system, which allows for programming up to 8 different groups of exposures. 2 cables for Canon reflex cameras are provided, compatible with models such as the 600D (jack connection for remote shutter). Intermediate belt drive: the AZ-EQ5 GT Synscan is equipped with an intermediate belt drive (like the AZ-EQ6 GT), to obtain greater tracking precision, as well as lower periodic error and backlash.

In alt-azimuth mode, the AZ EQ5 GT doubles its load capacity: 15kg + 15kg of telescopes, to leave you maximum freedom in using your setups! Switching from EQ to AZ mode is very simple and fast, taking about 2 minutes.
